Bad Beats Happen

Had a bad beat, don't let it get you down or effect your handicapping outlook.

With college basketball and the NBA in full swing, we must remember that bad beats happen. Some novice bettors seem to take a bad beat as a “sign” from God that they should not be gambling. Yet, of course they eventually end up betting again sometime in the near future after the sting of the tough loss has taken place. One must remember, however that it is just one game. If I have learned anything in my 15+ years of handicapping, it is that this racket is geared for people who can endure the long haul. The old cliche that seems overused is true however in the case of sports betting, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

For instance two years ago in the Final Four match-up between Connecticut and Duke, I suffered what we in the biz call a “bad beat.” I was on Connecticut -2. If you recall the game, Connecticut was losing most of the game because Emeka Okafor was on the bench in foul trouble. With about three minutes to go in the game, Okafor finally got back in there and dominated. Connecticut went on a big run and eventually took a four point lead with less than ten seconds to go.

What happens next? Chris Duhon receives a pass and launches a meaningless three point shot from half-court, it banks off the backboard and goes in. Connecticut wins by one. I felt completely deflated and probably punched a few things around the house. Eventually I got over it in a matter of an hour or so. Do you want to know what I did next? I started handicapping the Championship game that was set to be played between Connecticut and Georgia Tech. I didn’t force a play but my handicapping analysis told me that UCONN was going to win that game by double digits, and they were only 5 point favorites. Come, Monday I placed my wager on Connecticut and they completely manhandled Georgia Tech. Lady luck is out there but the fact remains “bad beats” are just part of the game. Remember, you are not cursed. They happen to all sports bettors and anyone who hasn’t had a gut-wrenching loss is a liar. Pick yourself back up and keep looking for value in the games to come.
