Wagering On Basketball Totals
Many bettors are often unaware of betting the totals in the NBA or college basketball. Any game in the NBA will have a total on it regardless if it is the playoffs or preseason and over the last couple years almost every NCAA basketball game now has a total. Yippee, more wagering opportunities for the sharp gambler. Many bettors have no idea of how much they are missing by not paying attention to the totals in a basketball game.
Betting the totals in the National Basketball Association or NCAA is one of the simplest bets you can make. You quite simply decide if you think a game is going to score a lot of points or very little points, in other words, is it going to be an offensive battle or a defensive battle? There are some advantages that the bettor has by wagering on the over and under like some handicap factors. Many times betting on the totals can keep you from wagering on a team just because you want them to win. You can sit back and enjoy the game while still cheering for the team you want to win but you also will be cheering for them to either score a lot of points or for them to be scoring few points.
Many bettors who place a wager on the totals will often take the overs. Many people prefer to see an offensive battle than a defensive battle so they tend to bet on a lot of scoring. You must understand that oddsmakers realize this and the lines are adjusted to this habit, especially in nationally televised games. When deciding to bet the totals, you should start by analyzing the unders. This does not mean that every game is going to go under but it is very important to realize that most oddsmakers favor the overs when determining a line.
Let's use an example to make sure you fully understand the over and under betting in the NBA. If the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics were playing each other and the game expected total is 195. You now have the decision to make if you want place a wager that the total score will go over 195 or under 195. If the game ends up being 195 points exactly then it would be considered a push, no one would win and no one would lose. So if you took the unders in this particular game and the final score was 100 to 94, then total points scored in this game is 194. You would win! If you bet the over then you would lose because the score did not total over 195 points.
Look at the team's history to help you decide if they are an offense of team or a defensive team. This can often get you started in the right direction on determining if it's going to be an offense of shootout or a defensive grudge match. Check how fast a team plays as pace is one of the biggest factors in handicapping NBA games and probably the most important factor when considering an over or under bet in college basketball.
